Project Hope: More Than Groceries and Clothing

Every Monday afternoon, something special happens at Auburn First United Methodist Church. Our Project Hope volunteers welcome 45 to 60 neighbors in need, offering groceries, clothing, hygiene supplies, and perhaps most importantly, a smile, a handshake, and a reminder that someone cares.

Project Hope's mission is simple: to share Christ's love by meeting basic needs with compassion, dignity, and respect. We strive to create a welcoming community where everyone is valued, treated with kindness, and reminded that they belong.

The people who visit Project Hope come from all walks of life, each with a story of their own.

There's a family of five with three young daughters. Dad lost his job, and Mom spent time in the hospital. They visit us regularly, and the girls' excitement over finding their favorite foods or choosing a new piece of clothing is a joyful reminder of how much the little things can mean.

There's a Vietnam veteran whose eyes fill with tears when he talks about his beloved cat. Thanks to the generosity of the Auburn Humane Society, we're able to offer pet food alongside our other supplies. It's one of our most popular offerings, reminding us that for many of our neighbors, a pet is a cherished companion and a source of unconditional love.

And there's a quiet, timid woman who sometimes seeks refuge in a secluded corner. She communicates through sign language or simple written notes. We don't know everything about her circumstances, but we know she deserves the same kindness, patience, and dignity as anyone else who walks through our doors.

Project Hope is about much more than meeting physical needs. It's about seeing the humanity in every person who comes through our doors. It's about listening without judgment, offering kindness without conditions, and recognizing that everyone has a story worth hearing.

None of this would be possible without our wonderful team of volunteers, who show up faithfully each week with open hearts and willing hands. Their compassion brings to mind the words of Jesus:

"Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40 (NIV)

We're so grateful to our congregation and community partners, whose donations of food, clothing, hygiene supplies, and pet food make this ministry possible.

And we're growing! In addition to our regular Monday hours from 4–5 PM, Project Hope plans to begin opening on the third Saturday of each month, from 10 AM to noon, starting November 21. This expansion will help us reach neighbors who may not be able to visit during the week.

At Project Hope, we may not be able to solve every problem our neighbors face. But each week, we can offer a little nourishment, a little comfort, and the reassurance that they are seen, valued, and not forgotten.

And sometimes, that can make all the difference.

Donations are gladly accepted and can be dropped off during church office hours or Sunday mornings. To volunteer with Project Hope, sign up in the narthex on Sunday or email the church office.
